Knowledge of two languages at a native or near-native level in each of them is one of the most beautiful gifts we can give to children. Naturally and organically, this happens in families where parents or caregivers speak different languages. However, if only one language is spoken in your home, help can come from a preschool where some teachers speak only in a foreign language. It’s worthwhile to take advantage of the preschool age, which is extremely sensitive to language learning, to introduce a child to more than one language. The so-called language immersion involves familiarizing oneself with natural, authentic expressions in specific, child-friendly situations from everyday life. Similar to learning the native language, a child first becomes accustomed to the language, gradually begins to understand it, and only after some time, when ready, starts actively using it.

Just like in the case of learning the native language, it’s important not to expect immediate results from the child. Mastering a language, whether native or foreign, takes time. A toddler who has constant contact with a foreign language will sooner or later start using it to communicate with the surroundings.

From the beginning of our activity, we have focused on immersing children in the English language. Native speakers of this language are with the children all the time, not just for short lessons. They work with the children during their own work time, accompany them on walks and during meals, conduct circles and present Montessori materials. This creates plenty of opportunities for absorbing English, and every day we joyfully observe how our preschoolers communicate in English more confidently and naturally.
